This paper investigates the problem of interval observer-based actuator fault detection for T–S fuzzy systems subject to unknown time-varying parameters. The fault detection performance may be affected by such parameter variations. Moreover, the cooperativity condition required for conventional interval observers is generally difficult to satisfy in fuzzy systems. To address these issues, a novel fuzzy unknown-input interval observer is proposed, in which the unknown time-varying parameters are decoupled from the fault detection residual, thereby reducing the influence of these parameters on fault detection. Furthermore, sufficient conditions are derived to guarantee the cooperativity of the fuzzy error dynamics. On this basis, a fuzzy $$L_\infty $$ /MDF-based interval fault detection framework is constructed to improve robustness and reduce the minimum detectable fault (MDF). Finally, the proposed scheme is validated through simulations on an autonomous mine haul truck operating under unknown road-surface conditions, including dry, wet, icy, and snowy roads. Comparative studies with the existing methods are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed scheme.
