Ravi Chinta's article fits well with one of the main purposes of Brief Case: to provide an opportunity for managers to share and learn from each others' experiences. His topic, how to deal with a subsidiary whose strategy is failing, is also of wide relevance. Chinta stresses the importance of breaking out of the 'flywheel momentum' that can build up behind failing strategies and of looking at 'early warning signals' of trouble ahead. These thoughts are very consistent with the work that Ashridge Strategic Management Centre has done on strategic control processes. We are less persuaded that the Machiavellian balance of love and fear suggested by Chinta is the right objective for relations between parent organizations and their subsidiaries! We are sure that others will have their own views on this topic, and would like to invite further comments from readers.
