• Iron accumulation in fh-GAAs frataxin-deficient flies is tissue-specific and predominantly affects the central nervous system. • Glial cells are preferential targets of frataxin deficiency, showing greater vulnerability than neurons in an iron-dependent manner. • Reducing intestinal iron uptake improves survival, locomotor function, brain morphology and glial integrity.
