本研究基于近期关于功能性劳动分工的研究，并借鉴管理学文献中的方法，考察地方经济的功能性经济专业化。我们引入一个涵盖私营部门活动并考虑服务行业、但不强加传统制造业框架的地方功能性专业化度量指标。来自瑞典的证据表明，分析地方功能性专业化为理解地方经济如何在当今垂直解构和空间碎片化的价值创造体系中定位自身，提供了有前景的视角。为支持进一步研究，我们发布了将职业映射到功能类别的矩阵。
