• Bamboo-inspired porous structure imparts superior thermal expansion to polymer sheath of the yarn muscles. • Waterdrop template enables low-expansion polymers as muscle sheaths. • Porous sheath yarn muscles achieve 45% contractile stroke and 15 MPa isometric stress.
