• A segmentation method suitable for low-density fiber X-CT images was proposed. • The fiber orientation factors of 3D-printed and mold-cast specimens in all directions were compared at a 3D scale. • The fiber impacts on interlayer gaps and micro pores were clarified to establish their influence on mechanical properties.
