• Sm3+-activated mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles prepared by modified sol-gel technique. • Rapid in-vitro bioactivity was observed during SBF studies, even in the initial days of immersion. • Enhanced luminescent properties due to Sm3+ incorporation, contribution potential imaging capability. • Non-cytotoxic nature confirmed through hemocompatibility and in-vitro cell viability studies. • Notable antibacterial activity enhancement was achieved by incorporating Sm2O3 into MBGNs.
