Abstract

Abstract

• Prodigiosin shows promise as a sustainable textile dye but is limited by poor lightfastness. • A synthetic analogue, Py-Pro, was employed to elucidate the photodegradation mechanism. • Py-Pro undergoes Type-I self-sensitized photodegradation, generating superoxide radicals that drive chromophore cleavage. • Structural modification of the donor group enhances photostability in derived analogues. • Enhanced intramolecular charge transfer promotes intersystem crossing and accelerates photobleaching, providing guidance for dye design.
