• The application of furfural residue (FR) wastes in AD was proposed. • Methane potential of FR was quantitatively evaluated for the first time. • High TS and alkaline pretreatment synergistically enhanced digestion efficiency. • Highest methane yield of 106.77 mL/g TS was obtained at 6% TS with AK condition.
