Abstract

• Bias- and temperature-induced microstructural changes weakly affect CrN KIC. • CeSi2 alloying increases hardness to 27.5 GPa and boosts KIC by ∼20%. • CrN–TiN superlattices raise hardness by ∼40% through interface strengthening. • Superlattice architecture enhances KIC by ∼50% via coherent lattice stresses. • Alloying and multilayers outperform pure microstructure tuning for KIC control.
