Numerical methods have to be used to solve most stochastic problems. Since these methods apply only to finite dimensional (FD) problems, i.e., problems involving finite sets of random variables, and stochastic problems are usually infinite dimensional, only FD versions of the posed problems can be solved numerically. FD versions result by representing the random functions in the definitions of posed problems by finite dimensional (FD) models, i.e., deterministic functions of space and finite sets of random variables. It is shown that material responses corresponding to FD models of random microstructures can be used as surrogates for target responses under some conditions. Examples are presented to illustrate the construction of FD material models and assess their performance.
