The articles in this special section focus on mobile communications and networks. One of the fascinating aspects of wireless technologies is that they pervade many areas, not merely handsets and laptops. This underlies advances in both implementation and architecture. The next generation of both Wi-Fi and 5G standards must support extraordinarily bandwidth-hungry applications, requiring technologies such as massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and millimeter-wave (mmWave). At the same time, the need for machine-to-machine communications such as the Internet of Things (IoT) raise diametrically opposed requirements for broad coverage with power-efficient radios. Finally, broadband wireless communication is being integrated into land, sea, and air transportation networks, posing new challenges in reliability and mobility. All of these drive researchers to push the envelope in multiple dimensions: channel coding, network infrastructure, antenna technology, and propagation analysis, to name just a few.
