• The grain heat stress window and threshold were cultivar-specific. • Grain number-heat stress functions varied greatly when Tmax exceeds 38°C. • Modified models improved simulation accuracy of grain number under heat stress. • Model differences in simulating results peaked in the 2080s under SSP585. • Grain number loss closely links to mean Tmax during sensitive period and function response curves.
