• An analytical model for predicting PAWJP-induced residual stress is developed. • Model considers material’s cyclic loading behavior induced by multiple particle impacts. • The influence of parameters on residual stress is revealed by CFD and FE simulations. • The formation mechanism of the W-shaped residual stress distribution is revealed. • Vertical impact velocity significantly affects the magnitude and depth of CRS.
