Abstract

The problem of modular scattering-based design of complex dissipative networks is addressed. A notion of a proper dissipative network is introduced which refers to a dissipative network with a specific type of supply rate and certain internal stability properties. Conditions are formulated under which an interconnection of proper dissipative networks is itself a proper dissipative network. The design of scattering transformations is subsequently presented which guarantees that an interconnection of proper dissipative networks is proper. Thus, proper dissipative networks can be used as modular blocks that can be further interconnected to form larger networks thus allowing for iterative design of complex networks of dissipative systems. To ensure full generality of the results, the behavioral framework for modeling of dissipative networks is utilized. An example is presented which illustrates the process of modular scattering-based design of complex networks of dissipative systems. (c) 2026 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
