• MoO42- intercalation and interface engineering construct coral-like core-shell heterostructures. • Hierarchical 1D/3D architecture enables rapid ion/electron transport under high-mass-loading conditions. • MoO42− intercalation enlarges LDH interlayer spacing and improves electrolyte accessibility. • Interfacial charge redistribution accelerates Faradaic reaction kinetics. • High areal capacitance of 13 F cm−2 achieved at 10 mg cm−2 mass loading.
