• The influence of mono- and hybrid- fibers on workability, strength and durability was revealed. • The differential reinforcement mechanism of short PVA, long PVA and steel fiber was elucidated. • Multi-scale crack bridging and hierarchical energy dissipation mechanisms dominate the synergistic reinforcement effect of hybrid fibers.
