• A one-step synthesis strategy was proposed to prepare the Fe-C-N multiphase composites. • The controls of sintering conditions on the phase composition and microscopic morphology were identified. • The synergy of the multiple loss species effectively broadens the absorption bandwidth, reaching 4.92 GHz at a thickness of 1.6 mm.
