For decades, extensive research has been conducted to characterize mesoscale eddies using merged multi-satellite altimeter data with resolutions ranging from 1/8° to 1/4°. However, the absence of unified, high-resolution datasets capable of global submesoscale eddy identification and comprehensive multi-scale analyses remains a lacuna. This study utilizes 1/10° altimeter datasets incorporating observations from the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission, spanning from April 2023 to April 2024, to identify 5,078,443 eddies across the global oceans. The detected eddies are classified based on the local Rossby Radius of Deformation to capture multi-scale characteristics, and their vertical structures are further analysed using Argo profile data. Mesoscale eddies are prevalent in strong western boundary currents, while submesoscales are primarily concentrated in tropical regions, with global mean values of radius, amplitude, and eddy kinetic energy (EKE) at 42.13 km, 1.03 cm, and 114.64 cm2/s2, respectively. Vertically, mesoscale eddies extend to depths of up to 1000 m with stable conical cores, while submesoscale eddies are confined to the upper ~300 m, featuring band-like anomalies, flattened cores, and stronger localized signals. These findings offer the first global, high-resolution view of multi-scale eddy structures, advancing our understanding of ocean dynamics and supporting improved parameterization in ocean modelling.
