Multicriteria Metric for Assessing the Sustainability of Adsorbents: From Production to Disposal

This work presents the adsorbent sustainability index (ADSUS), a multicriteria metric for evaluating and comparing the sustainability of adsorbent materials. Conceived considering 15 criteria distributed across three stages of the material’s life cycle (production, application, and disposal), the metric integrates technical, environmental, and operational parameters, including raw material type, energy demand during synthesis, regenerability, disposal conditions, and adsorption performance. A simple dedicated software was developed to standardize the application and the practical assessment of the ADSUS of the material, allowing systematic comparison among different adsorbents and evaluation of their overall sustainability. The feasibility was demonstrated by applying ADSUS to five adsorbents used for diclofenac removal, enabling a comparative assessment of their sustainability.
