• Nickel–iron alloy boosted ammonia splitting at room temperature. • 71.9% ammonia conversion achieved with very low energy input. • Plasma and catalyst worked together to improve hydrogen release. • Catalyst remained stable without major structural changes. • Surface sites helped ammonia molecules break apart efficiently.
