• Near-surface La doping constructs coherent rock-salt layer on O3-NFM cathode. • La3+ increases Mn4+/Mn3+ ratio, suppressing Jahn-Teller distortion and O3-P3 transition. • NFMLa-2 delivers 80.9% capacity retention after 200 cycles at 1C.
