Novel Approach and Index for Evaluating Harmonic Contributions of Multiple Harmonic Sources Based on Gaussian Mixture Model With Multipoint Harmonic Phasor Measurements

Determining the harmonic contributions (HCs) of multiple harmonic sources (HSs) is a challenging task owing to the large fluctuations of background harmonic sources (BHSs) that impede the accurate evaluation of HCs for the existing approaches. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel approach based on the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) using multipoint synchronized harmonic phasor measurements. In the proposed approach, the multipoint model capable of simultaneously solving multiple harmonic transfer impedances (HTIs) is first constructed, where the fluctuations of background harmonic voltage are treated as the statistical variables represented by multiple different Gaussian distributions. Then, we resort to the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) for the estimation of the model parameters associated with BHSs and HTIs, achieving good estimation performance under large fluctuation levels of BHSs. Finally, a new HC index is formulated to synthetically evaluate the overall HCs of each HS to the harmonic problems of the concerned area. The proposed index considers not only the differences in the severity degree of harmonic-standard-exceeding problems on different concerned buses but also the time-varying characteristics of the HSs being evaluated. It is more effective than the existing index in identifying the real harmonic contributors to the concerned area. The simulations performed in the IEEE 33-Bus test system have demonstrated the advantages of the proposed approach, with more than 50% accuracy improvement over the existing approaches.
