• Stewart's wilt incidence and severity were surveyed in Sulawesi Island. • Indonesian isolates showed variable pathogenicity and virulence on maize. • Early seedling infection caused water-soaked lesions and rapid wilting. • Field and laboratory symptom differences of Stewart's wilt were clarified. • Pantoea stewartii strains from Sulawesi Island, Indonesia were deposited in GenBank.
