Although several researchers have looked at different aspects of designing sensors for digitization purposes, only one study (Basu, 1992) addressed, partially, the problem of optimal sensor placement in a 2-D array. The distribution of sensors on sensors' area or pixels on a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) is often done arbitrarily or uniformly (in most cases) as determined by international standards. In this paper, we tackle this problem in its entirety and report the optimal distribution of pixels (sensors) on an image plane for a given resolution, to solve stereo reconstruction problems. We minimize the discretization error along the x and y axes under depth and range constraints in order to find the optimal distribution of pixels. Results show that the widely used uniform distribution is not always a good choice. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
