• P5CS preferentially binds the 5′ UTR of mRNAs in an enzyme-independent manner • P5CS contains an RNA-binding motif within amino acids 150–159 of its kinase domain • P5CS blocks pre-translational 48S assembly via mRNA 5′ UTR and eIF3a/3d interactions • P5CS RNA binding suppresses global protein synthesis and cancer cell proliferation
