• An evidence-based design framework is developed for PCM-assisted solar stills. • PCM improves yield mainly by shifting heat to late-afternoon and night operation. • PCM mass, melting range, water depth, and placement govern productivity trends. • Modeling and data-driven tools are linked to design screening and interpretation. • A minimum reporting framework is proposed for fair solar-still benchmarking.
