Food harvesting is a critical stage for ensuring food supply-chain stability and food security, yet harvesting losses may reduce agricultural productivity and farmers' economic returns. This study examines farmers' perceptions of factors associated with mechanized corn harvesting losses in Northeast China from an integrated Human-Machine-Environment-Crop perspective. Drawing on frontline agricultural producers' field experience, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of corn farmers and developed a model to examine how environment, crop, harvester, and operator related factors are associated with perceived mechanized harvesting losses. Partial least squares structural equation modelling was used to assess the measurement and structural models, estimate the hypothesized path relationships, and identify the relative importance of the examined loss related factors. The model explained 67.7% of the variance in perceived mechanized harvesting losses after adjustment. Results indicate that operator experience, field shape regularity, crop plant density, difference between harvester working width and row spacing, crop stem lodging, and field size were significantly associated with perceived mechanized harvesting losses. In contrast, crop grain moisture content, harvester condition, and operator skill level were not significantly associated with perceived mechanized harvesting losses. Significant inter-factor relationships were also found between field shape regularity and harvester condition, operator experience and operator skill level, and crop plant density and crop stem lodging. These findings provide perception-based evidence for improving mechanized corn harvesting management in Northeast China.
