• Healing characteristics of MgO expansive agent-based composite capsules were explored. • Effects of cracking age and capsule dosage on self-healing efficiency were quantified. • The formation and deposition of Mg-containing products promoted the self-healing of crack. • Relationship between healable crack width and crack length and capsule dosage was revealed.
