• N supplementation significantly mitigates Cd-induced growth inhibition in Ulva. • N restores photosystem II efficiency and photosynthetic pigments under Cd stress. • N increases total Cd burdens but reduces toxicity via subcellular redistribution. • Cd shifts from cell walls to intracellular soluble fractions upon N enrichment. • N triggers a metabolic shift from sugar-based to protein-based osmolytes.
