Abstract

Abstract

En 中文
The concept of liquid piezoelectricity fundamentally challenges the established idea that piezoelectricity requires solid-state crystalline structures. By demonstrating that room-temperature ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents generate electric charge through pressure-induced transient crystallization, this emerging phenomenon establishes an entirely new class of electromechanically active materials. The implications span energy harvesting, soft robotics, flexible electronics, and self-powered sensors where traditional brittle piezoceramics cannot operate effectively. Longer-term ambitions include optimizing liquid-phase piezoelectric coefficients, integrating these systems into structural composites for energy-storage devices, and scaling production for commercial applications. This could enable damage-resistant, piezo-pneumatic devices and scalable, shape-agnostic charge generation systems. The societal benefits are far-reaching, with applications in lighter aerospace components with embedded sensing capabilities, wearable health monitors powered by human motion, and sustainable energy solutions that combine structural integrity with functional performance across automotive, biomedical, and renewable energy sectors.
