• 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)-based PIs were synthesized. • HMF-based PIs exhibit V-0 flame retardancy without additives. • NIR-triggered self-healing with 97.4% efficiency at 1.42 W·cm−2. • Closed-loop recyclable with 81.9% strength retention after three cycles. • Dynamic imine networks combine recyclability, self-healing, and flame retardancy.
