The anatomy of the human olfactory system is unusual relative to other sensory systems. To elucidate the principles underlying this anatomy, we develop a theory of olfactory predictive coding. We propose a possible circuit motif that functions to predict olfactory inputs and minimize olfactory prediction error. We formulate a ‘predictive map’ hypothesis of piriform cortex based on its encoding and retrieval of sensory relations. We show how predictive coding applies to many olfactory-related phenomena, including sniffing, odor naming, cross-modal interactions, attention, and interoception.
