• Ugni candollei is one of three species of Ugni native to Chile called “murta” • U. candollei extracts used traditionally as a preservative • 16 pentacyclic triterpene acids were isolated from leaves and twigs of U. candollei • Newly described triterpene ugnic acid C had strong antibacterial activity • Ugnic acid C most likely contributes to the preservative properties of U. candollei
