The sparse reconstruction (SR) imaging method based on Lamb waves, is effective for accurate damage localization for plate structures, however, it is still challenging to evaluate damage quantitatively. This paper proposes a pseudo-force-based sparse reconstruction (PF-SR) imaging method to overcome the problem. Firstly, it is stated that the scattered wave field produced by defects in a damaged structure is equivalent to that induced by pseudo-forces. Instead of using dispersion relations, we adopt finite element (FE) models for dictionary construction. This makes it possible to consider multi-mode signals and realize multiple damage imaging. It also demonstrates a dictionary construction method that allows the fusion of multi-frequency and multi-excitation information by considering the group sparsity. Finally, the method is verified numerically and experimentally on both flat and variable-thickness plates with single or multiple damage. The results show that the method can not only localize but also identify the extent of the damage.
