• Under low‑K stress, P. ussuriensis rootstocks better maintain scion leaf K⁺ content, leaf area, and biomass than P. betulaefolia. • Transcriptomic analysis shows that efficient rootstocks regulate phenylpropanoid, flavonoid pathways and POD genes involved in lignin biosynthesis. • A regulatory model is proposed where ROS signaling and lignification mediated by rootstocks contribute to potassium use efficiency and scion growth.
