Recognition of enantiomers is a needed important and special modes of molecular recognition. Challenges remain to achieve online real-time analyses of enantiomeric compounds. By sandwiching an AT cut quartz crystal with Au electrodes followed by self-assembly of a chiral selector of choice (in very small amount) as surface coating produces a device known as chiral quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). It generates precise frequencies when it is driven properly. The QCM is capable of rapid real-time recognition of a variety of enantiomers in nanoscale quantity by a correlation between frequency decrease and the mass of the material adsorbed on its surface via the Sauerbrey equation. Besides, it can help predicting elution order of enantiomers and choosing the appropriate chiral stationary phase for chromatographic separation. This paper describes (i) concept, application and recent progress on chiral QCM with the relevant literature, (ii) a variety of chiral selectors used, and enantiomeric molecules which have been detected or recognized, and (iii) a review of the significant work on the enantiorecognition with chiral QCM, with an outlook into potential future directions. Besides, it presents a useful coverage for the non-specialists to understand where this study fits into the existing literature on enantiomeric recognition methods.
