• NH4+ boosted sulfadiazine degradation in biochar-activated periodate (BC/PI) systems. • •IO3 was revealed as the dominant reactive species in BC/PI. • NO2• drove accelerated sulfadiazine degradation in BC/PI/NH4+. • Energy barrier reduction for NO2• oxidation was confirmed through DFT calculations. • Nitro-byproducts with enhanced toxicity were detected in BC/PI/NH4+.
