Water holds substantial energy in various forms, of which small-scale droplet-based energy is particularly abundant and promising in developing wearable and energy-harvesting technologies. In recent years, dropletbased electrical devices (DEDs) have garnered considerable attention as one of the most important research directions because of their compactness and high power generation potential. Droplet-based energy not only complements current energy sources but also shows potential for utilization in wearable technologies and as universal energy harvesters. In this review, we investigate recent developments in DEDs based on experiments that focus on the fundamental mechanisms of liquid-solid and liquid-liquid interactions. This review includes an exhaustive investigation of device structures based on material selection and output performance as pivotal factors, exploration of the potential applications of hydrovoltaic technologies, and a thorough analysis of the primary challenges impeding the improvement in the efficiency of energy conversion and upscaling of output power. Finally, we summarize the existing limitations, prospects, and opportunities of these emerging technologies.
