Abstract

Abstract

Polymer gels and networks have emerged as highly adaptable and multifunctional materials, offering a unique combination of high porosity, tunable physicochemical properties, and stimuli-responsiveness, which makes them particularly suited for addressing complex environmental challenges. This review provides a comprehensive examination of recent advances in the design, functionalization, and application of polymer gels and networks for environmental protection, with emphasis on water purification, oil spill remediation, environmental sensing, soil moisture retention, carbon capture, and air purification. Strategies for enhancing performance through chemical modification, nanomaterial incorporation, and the use of bio-based or biodegradable feedstocks are critically discussed, highlighting approaches that improve selectivity, efficiency, reusability, and eco-compatibility. Case studies demonstrate the potential of these materials to simultaneously address pollution mitigation, resource conservation, and climate change adaptation, while also underscoring existing challenges such as mechanical stability, large-scale manufacturing, and the environmental safety of degradation products. Emerging research trends point toward the development of multifunctional, self-healing, and intelligent gel systems, integration with digital monitoring platforms, and adoption of green synthesis routes, enabling scalable and sustainable deployment.
