• New submarine landslides have been discovered in the northern South China Sea. • Sediment waves are considered as the weak layer controlling recurrent landslides. • The formation of these sediment waves is linked to the dissipation of internal waves. • This type of weak layer can be recognised using high-resolution seismic data.
