The rapid growth of global rubber industry not only improved people daily lives but also generated a large amount of waste rubber, causing serious environmental pollution and resource waste. Herein, a facile and effective strategy was reported for converting waste rubber into carbon-based electrode materials via the thermal-chemical process. It was found that a pyrolysis temperature of 700 degrees C promoted the formation of uniform, slender filamentous carbon on Fe/Al2O3(II) catalyst, which reached a yield of 423 mg/gcatalyst and the high quality. Moreover, the filamentous carbon on Fe/Al2O3(II) derived from the rubber reduced the charge transfer resistance, and thus improved the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH electrolyte, which achieved a low overpotential of 297 mV (35 mV lower than commercial RuO2) at 100 mA/cm2, and along-term stability at 200 mA/cm2 for at least 100 h. This work provided a novel perspective for the efficient recycling of waste rubber into the high-value, functional carbon materials for the electrode application.
