• Koopman autoencoder extended to forced coastal-ocean systems and compared to POD. • Surrogates evaluated on three real-world hydrodynamic coastal-ocean domains. • Temporal unrolling improves multi-step prediction accuracy. • Koopman surrogates yield -0.64%–12% error change vs MIKE 21 compared to observations. • Surrogates are 300–1400x faster than physics-based model.
