Abstract

Abstract

En 中文
In recent years, regulatory constraints have increasingly been seen as factors likely to affect the transmission of monetary policy. This study examines the effect of regulatory constraints on the transmission of monetary policy to bank lending in seven countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) over the period 1990 to 2021. The study uses a parametric approach (Pooled Mean Group) with data from BCEAO, World Development Indicator and Global Financial Development. The results suggest that the transmission of monetary policy on lending by banks subject to stricter capital adequacy regulations is reduced. In contrast, banks subject to liquidity ratios appear to transmit monetary policy more extensively. These results point to the need to make regulatory constraints more flexible, taking into account banks' ability to rebuild their capital.
