Teacher leaders of Color, specifically Black and Latinx teachers, can be instrumental in diversifying the predominately white teacher workforce. While traditional roles of teacher leaders have been focused on improving instruction, this article offers a conceptual framework to re-envision the role of teacher leaders of Color to inform critical change in hiring, mentoring, inducting, and retaining teachers of Color. This article draws on the authors' reflections after working with 20 teachers of Color to collectively transform district policies and practices around hiring and retention of teachers. The Social Justice Teacher Leadership framework outlines four principles supporting this reimagining with specific strategies to implement each: Developing Allies and Collaborators, Making Racist Systems Explicit, Building for Sustainability, and Planning for Intransigence and Adaptability of Racism. Through this framework, teacher leaders of Color can disrupt and transform inequitable structures in their local context that contribute to injustices in the hiring and retaining teachers of Color.
