The current study employed a convenience sampling method and conducted a questionnaire survey among 1066 high school students from a regular high school in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. The study explored the relationship between perseverance and depression, as well as the serial mediating roles of study stress and problematic mobile social media use. The following questionnaires were administered: The Perseverance Scale, Study Stress Questionnaire for Middle School Students, Assessment Questionnaire of Problematic Mobile Social Media Usage, and Patient Health Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and the bootstrap method were used to test the serial mediation effect. Results showed that 220 students might exhibit moderate or more severe depressive symptoms (potential prevalence = 20.64%). Significant correlations were observed among the variables and their dimensions. The results indicated perseverance was directly associated with depression. Study stress and problematic mobile social media use played serial mediating roles in the relationship between perseverance and depression. The current findings suggest that perseverance, study stress, and problematic social media use are important factors closely associated with depression risk among high school students. These findings provide potential intervention directions for future mental health promotion efforts in this population.
