• The exceptional nutritional and strong agronomic resilience of buckwheat has been identified for making it a key crop for enhancing food security. • Identified Breeding Bottlenecks; yield instability from seed shattering, flower abortion, and a heteromorphic self-incompatibility system that imposes widespread cultivation for breeding. • A Genomics-Informed Improvement Strategy roadmap to dissect the genetic architecture of key agronomic traits using integrated, high-throughput genotyping and phenotyping. • Targeted Gene Identification and Validation to identify and validate candidate genes • controlling priority traits like non-shattering, self-compatibility, and nutritional quality, with targets validated using functional genomics and CRISPR-Cas9. • A holistic strategy—including genomics, participatory breeding, value chain development, and market innovation—is outlined to mainstream buckwheat as a climate-smart, farmer- friendly, and health-promoting crop.
