From 1972 to 1985 the author was the teacher‐in‐charge of a primary school unit for children with special educational needs. She undertook an investigation of ex‐pupils of the unit for her thesis towards an M.Phil. degree from Manchester University. Here she deals with secondary schooling; other topics treated in the thesis (Sheldon, 1989) include further education, employment, social life and leisure interests.
