Abstract
Knowledge of the structures of the molecules involved in a biological reaction is necessary for deducing a mechanism for the reaction. Structures and mechanisms can lead to rational design of drugs, and effective methods for controlling biological reactions. This chapter summarizes what has been learned about the structures of RNA molecules by solution methods, mainly nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Specific structures will be described with emphasis on the generalizations that can be deduced from the structures. Coordinates for most of the structures described are available in the Protein Data Bank and the Nucleic Acid Data Base (see Chapter 3).
