• 3 Ball-on-rod test rig was modified to study the effect of electric loading on RCF. • Electrical loading decreased the fatigue life and altered the test track significantly. • Progressive surface damage and discoloration was observed due to electrical loading. • Martensitic tempering and near-surface softening were observed.
